Where Are They Now? Bernice McCarthy

English, Literature, and Creative Writing; Religion class with Pat Mahoney
1971-1976

Favorite Saint Viator memory:
The Program I worked in when Viator went to four program offerings. I was in Program One, The “Alternative Program.” And without a doubt, the religion course with Pat and Pat. We created the content together and taught singly in regular classrooms with the 180 seniors divided into different classrooms with one of us teaching. Then once a week we all met together in the auditorium and one or two of us, depending on the content taught, teaching together while one observed. It was a terrific course and as you can imagine we had many fun times.

The impact teaching at Saint Viator had on you:
I received my Master's because of my work there, which led directly to my doctorate at Northwestern. I directly relate any success we have had with my work at Viator, where we acknowledged the beauty of the diverse ways people learn.

What made Saint Viator unique:
Outside of the fact I was the only woman teaching at Saint Viator at that time, the students were the finest group of young people I had ever met or worked with. There was real love there.
