Junior Shane Smith Achieves Rank of Eagle Scout

Saint Viator High School is honored to recognize junior Shane Smith, who officially achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on October 1. This distinction, earned by only about four percent of all scouts nationwide, represents the highest level of accomplishment in the Boy Scouts of America and reflects many years of discipline, leadership, and service.

Shane began his scouting journey in 2018 as a member of Cub Scout Pack 266 at St. James School under the leadership of Mr. Peter McLeod. During this time, he earned the Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting, before transitioning to Boy Scout Troop 34 in July 2020. He continues to grow within the troop today under Scoutmaster Mr. Todd Koclanis. Along the way, Shane earned 26 merit badges, participated in several summer camps, and was selected as the sole representative of his troop to attend National Youth Leadership Training in the summer of 2023—a distinction given to scouts who demonstrate strong leadership potential and character.

Central to earning the Eagle Scout rank is the completion of a significant service project. Shane chose to support a community particularly meaningful to him—the St. James School Band, where his own musical journey began in third grade. Noting that band participation had declined following the pandemic, Shane sought to help reinvigorate the program. He designed and constructed twelve custom music stands—an original design of his own creation. The project required weeks of planning and prototyping, followed by a full weekend of construction with the help of fifteen members of his troop. This work stands as a lasting contribution to the St. James music program and a reflection of Shane’s gratitude for the foundation it provided him.

In addition to his achievements in scouting, Shane is a dedicated and well-rounded member of the Saint Viator community. He is a member of the Symphonic Band, Tech Crew, and FIRE Crew, and he contributes his talents as a student-athlete on both the football and wrestling teams. His involvement across campus highlights his commitment to teamwork, service, and the pursuit of excellence in all areas of school life.

Shane expresses sincere appreciation for his family, troop leaders, fellow scouts, teachers, and friends who supported him throughout this journey. He is proud to have strengthened a program that helped shape his own growth and is grateful to give back to the community that encouraged him.
