Six Teams, One Mission: A Historic Year of State-Bound Success

In a year defined by faith, perseverance, and extraordinary talent, Saint Viator High School has achieved a milestone that will echo through its halls for generations: six different sports teams earned their place at state competition in the same school year, and spring sports haven’t even started. It’s a testament not only to athletic excellence, but to a school culture rooted in discipline, community, and the values of Catholic education.

Nolan Dowling, new to the Athletic Director position this year, beamed, “This year wasn’t just about winning – it was about watching our students living out our Catholic mission through teamwork, humility, and perseverance. Sending six teams to State is historic, but the character they showed along the way is what truly makes us proud. This is also extraordinary because of the shared mission behind them. Coaches collaborated, athletes supported one another across sports, and the school community showed up in full force, united by faith and school pride. I’m happy to be part of this amazing culture and am now proud to call myself a Lion!”

Below are the standout moments that defined this remarkable run.
  • Girls Cross Country, record-breaking and fearless, finished 5th in State.
  • Boys Golf, with a dream run, finished 5th in State.
  • Boys Wrestling, showing depth, discipline, and dominance, ended their season with an individual State Champion and two individuals earning 6th place in State.
  • Girls Wrestling, showing grit and perseverance, ended with an individual placing 2nd in State.
  • Girls Basketball, for the first time in school history, with a group of extraordinary young women on and off the court, made a state appearance and finished 4th.
  • Boys Club Hockey, a roster built on speed, discipline, and fearless play, captured the State Championship for the first time in school history and delivered a performance that will be remembered for years. A third-period surge sealed the victory, sending the Lion Nation section into a celebration that shook the Allstate Arena.
As remarkable as this year has already been, the most exciting part may be what’s still ahead. Spring sports are just beginning, and the energy around campus is electric. With baseball, softball, track and field, boys volleyball, girls soccer, boys tennis, boys and girls lacrosse, and bass fishing gearing up, there’s a growing sense that this could be a once-in-a-generation athletic year.

Dowling shared what the school is hoping for as the next season begins: “Our fall and winter teams set an incredible standard, but what inspires me most is seeing our spring athletes ready to write their own chapter. We hope they compete with heart, support one another, and continue representing our Catholic mission with pride. If state appearances come, that’s a blessing — but the journey, the growth, and the joy of playing are what we value most.”
