Saint Viator Names New Varsity Boys' Soccer Head Coach

Saint Viator High School Athletic Director Jason Kuffel announced the school will be promoting Byron DeLeon to the position of Head Coach of the boys’ varsity soccer team. DeLeon has been coaching boys’ soccer for nearly 20 years and has recently served as the Head Coach of the Saint Viator boys JV soccer team as well as Assistant Coach of the boys' varsity soccer team. In 2017, DeLeon led the JV boys’ team to the ESCC conference championship.

“Byron has not only proven he is a skilled coach, but his coaching philosophies align well with Saint Viator values,” said Kuffel. “He understands that these boys are students first and athletes second.”

DeLeon has previously coached for Saint Patrick High School, Notre Dame High School for Girls, Mustangs FC, Lyons SC, Main East High School, and has 16 years experience as the Head Coach of the International Tribe Soccer Club Boys U18 team.

“I believe a student has the privilege to participate in an athletic activity as a reward for their academic achievement,” DeLeon said. “I also believe in healthy competition, but don’t adopt a ‘win-at-all-costs' mentality. Soccer presents players with unexpected challenges and my goal is to help these boys build character and gain confidence through the game.”

DeLeon will begin his new role as the Head Coach of the boys’ varsity soccer team in the fall of the 2021-2022 school year. This past year, the school became a leader in the ESCC conference in its efforts to create new safety protocols that protect players and coaches from the spread of COVID-19.
