The Class of ’70 Has Two Reasons to Celebrate

Timing is everything. Just ask members of the Class of 1970. After having to postpone their 50th reunion twice over the last two years, the delayed timing has led to an unexpected bonus.

Beginning Sept. 22, members of the class from Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary high schools are celebrating their milestone reunion -- and their 70th birthdays as well. They’re calling it: The Class of ’70 turns 70!

“The numbers just worked out in our favor,” says Kate Schafer Costello ’70, who is on the organizing committee. “It’s a double whammy.”

The result is a three-day celebration that begins Thursday, Sept. 22 when class members gather informally at the Arlington Ale House. The next morning features a golf outing at Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington.

On Friday, Sept. 23, many of the men from Saint Viator will gather for dinner at Moretti’s in Mount Prospect before heading over to Saint Viator’s home football game against the Dons of Notre Dame College Prep.

That same night, women from Sacred Heart will gather for a “Ladies Night Out” at the Arlington Heights home of Costello.

“We’ll definitely have birthday cake,” she quips.

This grand 50th reunion and birthday celebration culminate Saturday with a tour of Saint Viator High School, followed by Mass in the Alumni Memorial Chapel and dinner in Querbes Hall.

“Excitement is definitely building,” Costello says. “This has been a long time coming.”

But that’s not all. Each class is making a memorable gift in appreciation for their transformative educational experiences.

The Sacred Heart alumnae are helping to create a media-equipped meeting room for the Religious of the Sacred Heart sisters at their Marymount Convent. This will include an upgrade from the present armless chairs the senior nuns must now use, class members say, which they add are on a par with the pink and blue folding chairs students used to haul out from under the stage at Sacred Heart. Already, an anonymous donor has come forth to match donations up to a total of $20,000.

The Saint Viator men have chosen to raise funds for the school's renovated Counseling Center. This space, they say, is dedicated to providing the support that current students need to be successful at Saint Viator and in life.
