Arsenic and Old Lace
This year’s spring play is Joseph
Kesselring’s farce Arsenic and Old Lace. This dark classic
comedy involves the Brewster household which is far from dull.
Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic, debates whether to marry the
woman he loves in the midst of dealing with his crazy family. The
play features two spinster aunts who have resorted to mercy-killing
lonely old men with arsenic-laced glasses of wine. Also in the mix
are two eccentric nephews, one who thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt and
the other who has escaped from a mental institution. This unlikely
scenario provides unexpected comic and suspense-filled scenes.
