Prospective Families
// Scanlan Center
In 1993, the Scanlan Learning Center was
created through the creative energy, initiative, strong support and
encouragement of Robert and Ann Scanlan in memory of their son,
Scott ‘76. This program was founded as a statement of
ongoing commitment to students who require extra or special
attention to attain their goals of academic success. The Learning
Center is not a fee based program for the students who use
this important resource. The program continues to grow,
develop and offer invaluable assistance to make the Viator
experience available to these students.
The objectives
of the Scanlan Center are to:
- Develop
independent, life-long learning skills.
- Implement
strategies, skills and tools that can be incorporated into
learning as a way to maximize success in the academic curriculum.
- Develop an
understanding of oneself as a learner through the analysis of
personal learning differences, learning strengths and learning
styles.
- Develop
self-advocacy skills that promote proactive involvement in one's
educational process.
- Develop
communication skills appropriate to an educational setting.
- Explore
college level special needs programs and resources.
- Develop a
respect for diversity and differences as learned from the Gospel
message.
- Develop an
increased sense of pride, self-worth and self-confidence.
During the
2008-09 academic year, approximately 80 students will use this
valuable resource.
We are grateful for the
consistent, ongoing devotion of time, energy and resources by
Robert and Ann Scanlan and their family in support of this unique,
successful and in many cases, life-changing program which continues
to hold such promise for our students.
