The winter sports season proved to be another successful season for the Lions. Coming on the heels of one of the most memorable fall seasons in school history, the winter sports surely did not disappoint. The Lions continued to make their mark on the athletic landscape in the area.
Boys’ Basketball Makes it to Elite Eight
The boys’ varsity basketball team recorded its most successful season in school history by finishing with a record of 24 wins and 7 losses. They captured their first regional championship since 2001, and the first ever sectional championship in school history. The Lions lost a hard fought game to Marshall High School in the super-sectional putting them just one game away from making a state finals appearance. They were one of the final 8 teams in state in Class 3A. With the success of the team, individual awards came pouring in. Seniors Alan Aboona and Richard McLoughlin were both named to the East Suburban Catholic All-Conference team and to the Daily Herald All-Area team. Aboona was also named 4th team All-State by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association, All-State honorable mention by the Associated Press and special mention All-State by the Chicago Tribune. Head Coach Joe Majkowski was recognized this season as the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association District 4 Class 3A/4A Co-Coach of the Year.
Girls’ Basketball Puts Forth Great Season
The girls’ varsity basketball team also gave Lions fans a season to remember. The team finished with a record of 21 wins and 11 losses and captured the first regional championship in girls’ basketball since 2002. The Lions lost a hard fought sectional game to Johnsburg in Cahill gym to wrap up their memorable season. Senior Susan Hohenadel was named to the East Suburban Catholic All-Conference team and the Daily Herald All-Area team. Senior Mary Calov was also named to the Daily Herald All-Area team. The following members of the team were named to the Daily Herald All-Area Special Mention team: Ronnie Mack, Meghan Malone, Meghan McGrath, Bridget Urbanus, and Taylor Skala. Hohenadel also recorded her 1,000th point during the season, making her one of only three players in Saint Viator history to accomplish the feat.
Four Wrestlers Named All-Conference
The wrestling team continued to show strong improvements during the course of the season. Senior William Rittmeyer was the East Suburban Catholic Conference champion at 189 lbs. Also earning all-conference honors were seniors Eric Abrahamian (152 lbs), and T.J. Hohenadel (160 lbs), and junior Matt Izzi (135 lbs.). Rittmeyer, Abrahamian, and Hohenadel qualified for the Class 2A Fenton Sectional, and Abrahamian wrapped up his career with a trip to the state finals meet in Champaign.
Boys’ Swim Team Making Strides
Under the direction of new head coach Mary Ruffin, the boys’ swim team showed tremendous progress throughout the season.
Hockey Team
Brian Keefe was one of six players in the state to be named to the Blackhawk Alumni All-State Team. Keefe and fellow teammate, John Scully, were named to the All-State team. They were also joined by Dante Koeppen, Michael Obenauf and Dominic Zanfardino as members of the Metro North All-Star Team.
