Baseball is Regional Champs
The Lions won their first regional championship since the 2006 season. Seniors Julian Sipiora and Brendan King, and juniors Cory Kay and Robert Romano were named to the All-Conference team. In addition, Sipiora, Kay and sophomore Jack Czeszewski were named to the Daily Herald All-Area team.
Lacrosse Begins new Conference
After winning three consecutive Mid-Suburban League Championships in ’07 ’08 and ’09, lacrosse began a new era by forming a conference with other area Catholic high schools. They finished 11th in the state – a great accomplishment since Saint Viator is the smallest school in the highest division. They took 2nd in conference and almost upset the #5 Lyons Township in round two of the IHSLA playoffs. Juniors Brian Goss and Michael Krzoska, and senior Matt Barry were named first team All-Conference. Junior Conner Murphy and senior Connor Ptacin received honorable mentions to the All-Conference team. Barry was named 2nd team All-State and is the first Lion to go on to play Division 1. Ptacin was named Academic All-American by U.S. Lacrosse. This is the second consecutive year a Saint Viator lacrosse player has received the distinguished honor.
Girls’ Soccer Finishes Second in the State
The team finished an amazing season by claming state runner-up honors, the first state trophy for the program since 2005. They were also co-champions of the ESCC for the first time since 2005. They finished the season with a record of 21-9-1. All-conference selections included: seniors Samantha Gavin, Ariana Kulinczenko (All-Sectional, Daily Herald All-Area), Meghan McGrath (Daily Herald All-Area), Jackie Tumberger, juniors Kathleen Kane and Taylor Skala (All-Sectional, Daily Herald All-Area), and sophomore Katelyn Hammarlund.
Softball Captures Historic Title
The team captured the first regional championship in Saint Viator history with a win over Burlington Central. Senior Bridget Urbanus was named to the ESCC All-Conference team and the Daily Herald All-Area team. Junior Julie Sweeney was also named to the Daily Herald All-Area team.
Boys’ Tennis Finishes Strong
Seniors Dean Tanglis and Taylor Blaney were ESCC conference champions at 1st doubles. They also qualified for the IHSA state championship tournament for the second consecutive season. Junior Pat McConnell and senior Joe Rusch were conference medalists finishing 3rd at 2nd doubles. Tanglis and Blaney received an honorable mention to the Illinois High School All-State Tennis team for doubles.
Boys’ Track Qualifies for State
The team placed 3rd at the Glenbard South sectional and qualified for the state meet in five different events. The 4x200m relay team (senior Mike Sroka, juniors Justin Johnson and Pat O’Malley, and freshman John Balas) was the ESCC conference champion and qualified for state. Johnson also qualified for state in the 110m high hurdles, the 300m intermediate hurdles and the long jump. He was a conference medalist in the 110m and 300m hurdles, sectional champion in the 110m hurdles, and finished 6th at the IHSA state track and field finals in the 110m hurdles at Eastern Illinois University. O’Malley qualified in the 100m dash and was a conference medalist in the 100m dash.
Girls’ Track Makes it to State
The 4x800m relay team (freshmen Hanna Winter and Shannon Cooney, and juniors Kelli Wosick and Carolyn Hutyra) finished 2nd at the ESCC conference championship. They also qualified for the IHSA state finals at Eastern Illinois University. Winter also qualified in the 1600m run.
Boys’ Volleyball – Senior Richard McLoughlin was named ESCC All-Conference and Daily Herald All-Area.
Girls’ Water Polo – Junior Stephanie Nolan was named to the Daily Herald All-Area team.
Boys’ Water Polo – Senior Eric Primdahl and junior Peter Cleary were named to the Daily Herald All-Area team. |
