"SeaLions" remain undefeated

The Saint Viator Girls Swimming team was victorious Thursday evening in a triple dual meet with Regina and St. Francis.  Coming off a first place win at the Maine West Invite over the weekend, and a couple of tough practices early in the week, the girls showed their hard work in the pool is paying off.

Over 12 swimmers achieved lifetime best times.  Leading the Junior Varsity, senior Tracy Supergan registered a best time in the 100 backstroke (1.29.14) while junior Ashley Herzfeldt won the 100 backstroke for the JV with a lifetime best of 1.22.26. For the varsity, Freshman Erin Primdahl took the 100 backstroke (1:05.58) and the 100 Fly (1:03.68) and Senior Stephanie Nolan won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.27) and the 200 free (2:10.53) for the Lions.  Another notable swim was clocked by senior Kelly Schreuder, who swam to a best time in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.39).

The team will be in action again this weekend at the Hersey Jamboree.

Swim for a Cure Champions

Undefeated in dual meets this season, the Varsity squad won the Maine West Swim for a Cure Invitational this Saturday, defeating 8 other teams.

The Sealions started off the meet with a significant point deficit due to lack of diving, but once they hit the water, they never looked back. Lowering the meet record in the 200 Medley Relay by 5 seconds (Stefanowski, Battaglia, Primdahl, Shover) and 100 Butterfly by 2.5 seconds (Primdahl) set the tone for the day. Other notable performances included the 50 and 100 freestyle, and 400 Free Relay. As the second to last event, a thrilling 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke (Battaglia, Nolan, Primdahl) sealed the meet for the Lions.

The Sealions return to the water Wednesday, at home against Regina and St. Francis.

Sectionals and State

The Saint Viator Girls’ Swim team had an outstanding Sectional meet at Barrington HS. The Lions roster was made up of the 11 top female swimmers at Saint Viator HS. Of the total 35 competitive swims, 31 were lifetime best times, some coming very close to state time standards. Stephanie Nolan lowered her own school record by over a second and qualified for the IHSA state meet in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.02).

Nolan went on to the state meet one week later and swam the 2nd fastest 100 breaststroke in school history which placed her 33rd in Illinois.

Quote from the Coach: When taper and an entire season comes together like this all on one day, it is a very exciting thing to be a part of. The girls worked so hard this year and it was plain to see when each of them hit the water. I am very happy to have had the chance to work with these amazing athletes.

Saint Viator likes the bikes

One key component of training in the sport of swimming is finding variety. While there's no substitute for getting the proper amount of swimming in the pool, coaches are constantly on the lookout for ways to break up the routine and give their athletes an edge. At St. Viator, coach Adam Clementi embraces such non-aquatic training.

The Lions have embarked upon a more strenuous weights program for certain individuals this season, and for several years now they've made yoga a regular part of dryland training, too. And last week, in the days leading up to Maine West's Swim For A Cure Invitational, the Lions went a step further.

St. Viator assistant coach Katie Donatelli has a background in group fitness instruction and also works at Midtown Athletic Club in Palatine. So Clementi took advantage of her expertise by bringing his team in for a group session on the stationary bikes.

It was all part of St. Viator's plan to ease up a bit on the total pool yardage without sacrificing overall aerobic fitness. "It was really fun," Clementi said. "It was really good as a team-building exercise. The girls loved it."

The results at Maine West, where the Lions finished a strong third, seemed to reflect that. Clementi said many of his swimmers had exceeded their mid-season goals and were on track to achieve their end-of-season goals. But not before some more pool work.

"We're at that point of the season where everybody's tired," Clementi said after the meet. "I think breaking it up a little bit just gives everybody a little different perspective on things. I could tell coming in here that everybody had a better energy level."

On Saturday, all eyes turn to Olympic once again as the Huskies host the annual Jamboree, with area teams such as St. Viator, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove and Prospect competing.

Saint Viator vs. Crystal Lake Central

Saint Viator 59 - Crystal Lake Central 35
Current Dual-Meet Team Record: 3-1

Short Summary/Recap of Meet: Saint Viator’s depth kept them slightly ahead throughout the beginning of the meet, but a rallying win by junior Madeline Wimberly in the 500 free (6:00.76) gave the Lady Lions the momentum they needed to pull ahead in the late events. With a convincing win in the 200 Free Relay (swum by juniors Nolan, Battaglia, Mallof, and Shover), a 1 – 2 finish in the 100 backstroke (Stefanowski – 1:08.38 and Swiderski – 1:10.00), and a two body length win by Stephanie Nolan in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.70), the 400 freestyle relay victory by the Lions was the nail in the coffin for CLC.

Quote from the Coach: I was surprised to see both levels swim as fast as they did during such a heavy training phase of the season. Typically I would let up a bit after a win like this, but the girls are responding very well to their training and so far, staying healthy, so we are going to continue as planned and try to keep them tired.

19th Annual Saint Viator Invitational

3rd place
Current Dual Meet Team Record: 2-0

Ten teams competed in the 19th Annual Saint Viator Swimming Invitational. The close quarters and electric atmosphere contributed to a fast and exciting meet. The Prospect Knights (323 points) came out on top, beating St. Ignatius (311 points) and Saint Viator (282 points) who rounded out the top three teams.

Event wins by Prospect and St. Ignatius kept them in the lead for most of the meet, but Saint Viator’s solid depth allowed them to keep the meet close. The Lions closed out the meet with a thrilling victory in the 400 Free Relay with Juniors: Megan Shover (58.95), Samantha Swiderski (59.06), Margaret Stefanowski (59.95), and sophomore Carson Soch (1:03.35).

Girls Swimming Saint Viator hosts Bartlett

Win 47-46
Current Dual Meet Team Record: 1-0

The lady lions started their season with a bang by defeating Bartlett HS by the narrowest of margins. Saint Viator swimmers won many of the events, but the depth of Bartlett kept the meet close.

Megan Shover (Jr) won the 100 freestyle touching the wall 4 seconds ahead of the next competitor, as well as anchoring the winning 200 Medley Relay (Stephanowski, Battaglia, Schreuder, Shover) with a :25.9. Stephanie Nolan (Jr) won the 200 freestyle (2:10.96), then after helping the 200 Free Relay touch out Bartlett for another win with teammates Soch, Battaglia and Shover, she set the school record in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:09.18.

Quote from the Coach: I was would have been shocked at the times the Viator girls posted had I not already known the impressive amount of work so many of them put in over the summer months with their club teams. To be swimming this fast, this early in the season is both exciting and promising.
