Saint Viator High School
Academics // Scott R. Scanlan Learning Center

Since 1993, Saint Viator has staffed a resource center for students with diagnosed learning differences and/or those who qualify after a case evaluation by Saint Viator personnel. The staff helps students develop independent, lifelong learning skills, while working daily to implement the strategies, skills and tools to help students succeed.

Named after former graduate, Scott R. Scanlan of Arlington Heights, the center has served hundreds of students over the years, the majority of whom have gone on to attend the college of their choice.

Saint Viator was a leader among Catholic college preparatory high schools to offer services for special needs students at no additional cost. Over the years, its Scanlan Center has served as a prototype for other schools interested in meeting the abilities of all its students.

Approximately 75 to 80 students attend learning strategy classes on a daily basis, including some seniors who often come to the center before or after school, or during a lunch period, to receive support.

The Scanlan Center’s full time staff includes two fully certified special education teachers, a program assistant, and a testing coordinator who supervises needed accommodations. Their teaching methods include offering skills and strategies that aid a student’s ability to acquire information, as well as offering them specific support in necessary content areas when needed.

Staff members work closely with Northwest Suburban High School District 214 to develop and implement service plans. They also receive consultant services from District 214 on a regular basis.

Scott Scanlan graduated from Saint Viator in 1976, and it was a proud day for his parents, Robert and Ann, and his six siblings. When he passed away in 1992, his family pledged to spin their grief into something positive and enable other students with special needs to succeed in a college preparatory environment as he did.

The Scanlan Center celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2008.
