Students learn to become lifelong learners --- and library users --- in the Marie Gallagher Resource Center. Tucked away at the east end of the first floor corridor, its staff members aim to create a quite place where students can study, conduct research for assignments or find recreational reading materials.

Staff members are on hand to assist all students in becoming active and creative locators, evaluators and users of information to solve problems and advance their research.

The library is open to during the school day from 7:30 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. Its computerized database provides students with information on the approximately 9,000 books in the collection. However, the majority of students’ research is done online, using the library’s subscription to eLIBRARY. The comprehensive site eases the research process for students as it educates them about the tools available through digital resources. Specifically, it gives students access to more than 2,100 full-text magazines, journals, newspapers, transcripts and e-books.

Its sites are filled with multimedia presentations, with more than 4 million images, maps, web sites, videos and interactive simulations not found in any other online reference resources.

Library officials also work closely with students as they begin to use Turnitin.com. This is a Web-based service that draws from a compilation of Internet sources, academic databases and student submission to check papers for original writing. The goal is to teach students to express themselves effectively and properly through writing and to avoid plagiarism.

In doing their research, students will find 18 computers available, as well as 35 individual study carrels for private study. The library also has four small rooms for study groups, as well as the Writing Lab and staffed by members of the English Department.

Saint Viator’s Resource Center is a member of the North Suburban Library Association allowing students to access all the services provided by the member public libraries, located in Cook, Kane, Lake and McHenry Counties.
