The goal of the Physical Education Department is to foster a student’s sense of health and fitness, while promoting an active lifestyle and the benefits of regular exercise. Courses incorporate both wellness training, as well as participation in individual and team sports.

PE classes keep students moving, rotating them through indoor and outdoor activities, with sports that include archery, badminton, basketball, flag football, floor hockey, soccer, softball, volleyball, swimming and weight training.

Students need to earn two credits in Physical Education to meet the graduation requirement, including one half-credit in Health. These may be spread out over one semester every year, or during three-week, intensive summer sessions. Grades in Physical Education do count towards a student’s GPA.

At Saint Viator, students will find upgraded facilities housed in its new Boler Center, which opened in 2005. The expansion includes a second gym, a state-of-the-art weight room filled with specialized equipment and surrounded by an indoor running track, as well as multiple rooms for co-curricular sporting activies, including dance, indoor batting and other practices.

The pool received a new automated water filtration system, an air filtration system and dehumidification temperature control. It provides a venue for the swimming and water polo teams, however each PE student also must pass a proficiency test.

Upper-level PE classes concentrate on fitness as students develop their own fitness profiles and conduct regular fitness tests while adding more aerobic activities. Students also may advance to become PE Leaders, serving as role models and taking on leadership roles in class.
