Saint Viator High School
Academics // Mathematics

The Math Department offers multiple levels of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, advanced mathematics, statistics and calculus, as demonstrated by its five levels of college preparatory math for freshmen students alone.

From the regular track classes to honors and advanced placement, each student can customize their course of study to meet their needs and abilities.

While only three years of math are required for graduation, faculty members strongly encourage students to take math every year as part of a rigorous college preparatory course of study. Course sequencing at Saint Viator allows students to start at various levels of algebra, geometry or a combination of the two.

Electives include Introduction to Computer Science using C++ and Introduction to Statistics. Additionally, there are one-semester courses in advanced math and trigonometry, allowing students to customize their study of math, as long as they satisfy their college entrance requirements for their selected schools.

Of course, help is always available, when students need it. Members of the math faculty staff the math lab before school all the way through seventh period. Computers and calculators are on hand for problem solving.

The Rev. Arnold Perham C.S.V. moderates Saint Viator’s active math club. Fr. Perham is an award winning math teacher who promotes the use of computers and technology in the study of math, including the use of dynamic geometry construction software to help students better visualize in solving their problems.

Saint Viator math students also compete throughout the year, consistently placing among the top 20 schools in the state in the Illinois Math League contest for the last several years. Additional competitions include the American Math Competition, and for the last two years Saint Viator has seen one of its students qualify in the USA Math Olympiad.

Last year, the Saint Viator math team won the Division A contest sponsored by the Metropolitan Math Club of Chicago, held at Loyola University.
