The Modern World Language Department offers four levels of Spanish, French and Italian, as well as Advanced Placement classes for college credit. Currently, three levels of Mandarin Chinese are offered with plans to expand the program in subsequent years.
Students in all language courses will find themselves immersed in the state-of-the art Language Media Center complete with its digital technology and capability to play and customize recordings. Students are able to enhance communication skills such as pronunciation, comprehension and natural response through a variety of authentic multi-media resources.
In addition to the enhanced technology, emphasis in the department remains focused on developing the four main language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Its wider goal is to inspire students to become bilingual as they prepare to participate in an increasingly global society.
Students need two years of a modern language to graduate. However, many exceed this requirement by continuing their language study for three or four years. Students in levels 1-4 are required to take their respective National Language exam each year.
Students also may qualify for membership in the Spanish, French or Italian National Honor Societies. Participation in language clubs enriches studies through field trips, special cultural events and trips abroad.
